January Joys

With the way our January schedule has been (for some reason it's a month with a slew of really big deadlines at the end and two work trips for Michael thrown in), I had to grab the blogging minute when I have it (while the kids were at swim lessons and romping with the other kids. Gotta love what little kids can bond over in 5 minutes).

Winter persists, as it does in Colorado, with lots of cold. We've had warmer weather the last couple weeks, which has been such a blessing. Coupled with the slightly longer days, the kids, dog and parents have enjoyed some walks and bike riding (watching Asher, so true that you don't forget how). Asher discovered it's difficult to ride up frozen snow banks.

Asher has enjoyed playing in the giant snow piles after school, an activity that was sadly shut down after some adult became afraid of litigation if one of the kids got hurt. We "crazy" parents of the kids playing on the snow piles would have have liked to sign a waiver and let our kids just enjoy childhood games, bumps and bruises. While the reentry to school and the school schedule hasn't been easy for any of us, Asher seems to enjoy his days. A favorite science experiment recently was melting chocolate in his hand (and getting to eat it) as proof of people making heat. Sounds like fun to me! I got an email from Asher's teacher this week to remind him not to talk with his friends while the teacher was giving instructions. Of course, what was going on was quite interesting. Asher and two of his friends were having "races with their brains" and Asher's brain's name is "S."

Harper has been all of three - great moments and fighting moments. She is a vocal one! One Saturday morning at the pool, I watched her interact with a boy and nicely push him out of the way when he was blocking her. My inner feminist was so proud (although frustrated when such pushing is hard and directed at Asher, which equals fights at home). We have had to resort to good ol' bribing recently so that Harper comes out of her room to use the bathroom at nap and bedtime (it was the poop incident that really put me over the edge! Is this regression?). Fortunately, bribing has worked well so far as she loooooves
chocolate. Harper continues to enjoy playing school, "loving" on the dog, is now brave enough to "love" on the cat, and to talk about "little sister," who follows her around randomly, but who is smaller than Harps and can't do as many things. One day, little sister was green, and another she had blond hair and gray eyes. Harper also told me that she wishes she had a baby in her tummy like me. Oh, so sweet.

I continue to be amazed at my children's bravery at trying new things. I took Asher and Harper to Rope World here in Longmont, which is a school gym set up with rope swings, a zip line, and lots of things to climb on. Both unabashedly tried everything within their climbing ability, and Harper even tried some outside of hers. Asher's swim teacher told us this last weekend that he's one to try everything she tells the kids to do. Asher also went to a birthday party at JungleQuest, a warehouse full of rope swings, zip lines and things to climb on (imagine that). He didn't want to try the zip line or swing at first, but by the end was running with his friends to do the zip line over and over again. Both children also proved they are great boulderers, climbing over boulders outside Chick-fil-a on Saturday. (And yet, a dark room scares them. I do wonder if we had a bigger house, and we weren't always within talking distance what they would do).

We are waiting impatiently for spring still so far away so we can play more outside, but also waiting patiently as spring will bring a whole new variable to our life with a third child!
